Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an alkylamine-type antihistamine that competitively blocks histamine H1 receptors, preventing histamine-mediated allergic responses. It is considered one of the most potent H1 antagonists, generally producing less sedation than promethazine.
Adults: 4 mg every 4–6 hours; maximum 24 mg daily.
Children:
6–12 years: 2 mg every 4–6 hours; maximum 12 mg daily.
2–5 years: 1 mg every 4–6 hours; maximum 6 mg daily.
1–2 years: 1 mg twice daily.
Below 1 year: Not recommended.
CNS depression (sedation, apnea, cardiovascular collapse)
CNS stimulation (insomnia, tremors, convulsions, hallucinations)
Anticholinergic effects such as dry mouth, dilated pupils, flushing, hyperthermia, and gastrointestinal upset — particularly in children.
Chlorpheniramine may be incompatible with certain agents such as calcium chloride, kanamycin sulfate, noradrenaline acid tartrate, pentobarbital sodium, and meglumine adipiodone.
Known hypersensitivity to chlorpheniramine or related compounds
Newborns and premature infants
Use of chlorpheniramine is not recommended during pregnancy (especially the first trimester) or while breastfeeding, unless clearly needed and prescribed by a physician.
Caution should be exercised in patients with glaucoma or prostatic hypertrophy.
As drowsiness may occur, patients should avoid driving or operating machinery while under treatment.
Store below 25°C, in a cool, dry place, protected from light.
